Hospitality programs and the schools that offer them should always be accredited. The accredited status means that students can expect to receive a quality education which meets standards that hospitality professionals have established. As well, an accredited education in hospitality is considered to be of value by the industry, therefore being pertinent to post-graduate employment.
The Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA™) is the largest accrediting body for hospitality education. Working specifically on the baccalaureate level, the ACPHA™ is made up of 14 Commissioners, some of which are hospitality educators and executives from the hospitality industry. They meet every six months to review hospitality programs offered by U.S. colleges and universities.
Many regional bodies accredit hospitality programs as well, including:
- Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
- Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools
- Western Association of Schools and Colleges
- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
- North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
- New England Association of Schools and Colleges
